Holothuria (Halodeima) edulis
Lesson, 1830Enter the name for this tabbed section: Description
Holothuria edulis has a very distinctive coloration: black or dark brown on the upper surface (bivium) and pink on the lower surface (trivium) which gave it the common name "pink fish". In the specimens observed in Dhofar, the pink coloration extends on nearly the whole animal.
The shape of H. edulis is very similar to H. atra but considerably smaller than H. leucospilota but like these other two species, it can undergo a form a asexual reproduction by fission.

Holothuria edulis is a common species in Oman and throughout the Indo-Pacific. It is likely however, that genetic variations exist across its range.

Holothuria edulis share the same environment with H. atra and H. leucospilota. It also occupies often a more "rocky" environment which the two other species seem to avoid. All three species can reproduce asexually by antero-posterior( transverse) fission. Each of the two resulting organisms reconstruct the missing part within a few months.
